| Résumé | This paper describes the characteristics of the 2p₁₀-5d₅ radiation of Kr-86 which was adopted in 1960 as the primary standard of length. After a brief history of the developments leading to the adoption of this spectral line, its physical characteristics are discussed with a view to showing its merits as a standard. The relative merits of possible alternatives are also considered. It is concluded that the 2p₁₀-5d₅ radiation is superior to any available alternative. |
