| Résumé | This paper describes the results obtained during a randomized intervention study investigating the impact of ventilation rates on indoor air quality (IAQ) and the respiratory health of asthmatic children in Québec City, Canada. The objective of this study was to determine whether increased ventilation will lead to a corresponding decrease in the number of asthmatic symptoms in children, to correlate ventilation rates with IAQ, and to support research on health based ventilation rates. The ventilation intervention consisted of the optimization of the existing mechanical ventilation system or the addition of a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) or an energy recovery ventilator (ERV). The aggregate median air exchange rate during the heating-season in the intervention group was 0.17 h-1 before the intervention and 0.36 h-1 after the intervention. After the intervention there was a marked decrease in the concentration of a number of VOC’s, formaldehyde, CO2 and airborne mould spores demonstrating that ventilation interventions are effective at improving IAQ. |
