| Résumé | The Atmospheric Environment Service and the Flight Research Laboratory have used Knollenberg probes nounted under the wings Of the Twin Otter Atmospheric Research Aircraft for the acquisition Of cloud physics data. This report studies possible contamination Of the probe measurements by water drops or Ice particles shed from the aircraft propellers. A boundary—value problem is posed to determine the size Of the Water droplets and Ice particles which can, under typical operational conditions, reach the sample volume of the probes. An approximate solution is obtained in closed form and the results are found to compare favourably With those Of an "exact" numerical solution. It Is shown that water dropg With the appropriate mass and velocity are unstable and shatter long before they reach the probe stations. The droplet formation process is also analysed to determine Whether drops of the critical size for probe contamination can be formed on the propeller.
Finally the analysis indicates that probability of æaSurement contamination is very small. |
