Résumé | Cutters for a minesweeping system were tested in the Cavitation Tunnel at IMD. The flow speed was varied in a range from 3 to 12 knots, and the net hydrodynamic forces acting on the cutters were measured. Due to the size of the assembled cutters, the fin portion was tested separately from the cutter portion, and the results were combined together in the analysis. Curves were fit to the data; this allowed points at standard speed intervals to be used when combining the effects of the cutter and fin. The fitted curves matched the data very well, which is indicative of good quality experimental data. The total loads on the assembled cutter were reported at a convenient location on the sweep wire to which the cutter attaches. The centre of effort was reported with respect to the same point. In actual operation, the direction of the water flow with respect to the cutter is uncertain. This direction will be slightly different from the flow direction encountered during tests. |
