The metabolism of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid by suspension cultures of soybean root

Résumé
Cell suspensions of soybean root have been used in a study of the metabolism of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The cells were grown in a medium consisting of mineral salts, sucrose, B-vitamins and 2,4D. The cells required 2,4-D for growth. Naphthaleneacetic acid and 3-indoleacetic acid were ineffective. The fate of 2,4-D in the cells was determined after incubation with 2,4-D-2¹⁴C . Most of the activity was present as free 2,4-D and a methanol-soluble compound which on hydrolysis with emulsin yield glucose and the free acid. Some of the2,4-D was found in a protein fraction obtained by ammonium sulfate precipitation and separation on Sephadex G-50.
