Résumé | The snout and sink roll regions of a continuous galvanizing operation are of critical importance in achieving automotive quality coated steel products. Entrainment of dross particles into the deposited coating originating in the regions of the snout and at the pinch between the strip and the sink roll contribute to the difficulty of maintaining a defect free surface. Previous numerical models have described the flow, temperature and compositional variations in these regions in a conventional operation. In order to optimize the coating quality new numerical simulations were carried out by introducing a pumping system which can direct flow to these specific areas. The effect of circulating bath composition liquid zinc using an industrially tested pumping system directed to the inside surface of the strip within the snout and into the pinch area were analysed. Velocity, temperature and compositional gradients were calculated and compared to the standard configuration not using pumps. The results indicated that the quality of the coated steel can be improved using this system. |
