Résumé | The principal operational requirement for an escort tug is to be able to bring a loaded oil tanker to a controlled stop in the event of a steering or propulsion system failure on the tanker. The tug must be able to do this up to a maximum tanker speed of approximately10 knots. The force required to control the tanker is generated by the tug using a combination of yaw angle (typically between 35 and 55 degrees) and azimuthing thruster angle (relative to the centreline of the tug). Using this approach it is possible to generate a force with a magnitude of up to two and a half times the bollard pull of the tug. The resulting force and its angle of application depend on the speed of the tanker, the delivered power of the tug and the direction of the thrusters on the tug. A popular and reliable choice of propulsion system for escort tugs is twin vertical axis propellers (VSP), which give very flexible control over the level of thrust and its direction. These propellers are typically fitted inside a protective cage. |
