| Résumé | Experimental manipulation of photosynthesis and pod development in peas has suggested that symbiotic nitrogen fixation declines after flowering in response to the development of the pods (Bethlenfalvay et al 1978). However, Flinn (1974) showed that the rate of photosynthetic CO₂ uptake varies in response to changes in the rate of fruit growth. Thus, at a time when fixation and fruit growth are supposedly competing for assimilates, a decrease in fruit growth resulted in decreased CO₂ uptake rather than a diversion of photosynthate to other sinks. In these experiments, the relationships among photosynthetic CO₂ uptake, fruit growth and acetylene reduction were examined in the field using pea genotypes exhibiting different rates of pod development. |
