Résumé | This paper contains a review of technologies employed in the literature to provide data on ice conditions that the ship may encounter in hours to days. Masters use a wide variety of information to assess ice conditions along their planned route. This information is used to assess ice severity and to optimize the route to avoid damage to the ship, besetting, etc. This assessment is made by the officers in charge of the ship based on experience and metocean publications such as weather forecasts and ice charts. A fundamental challenge in allowing autonomy or decision-support for navigation of ice-covered waters is providing ice severity data that feeds decision-making. A framework for data aggregation is proposed, based on available ice sensing technologies. The proposed framework involved aggregating these diverse sets of data into a regional map of forecast ice severity based on a vessel-specific risk assessment such as POLARIS. This would provide a decision-making tool for ship operators and autonomous navigation systems. |
