Résumé | The interaction of aircraft wheels on traveled winter surfaces of a movement area is described by a tribosystem with its tribological parameters. The tribological parameters of the system are structural parameters, the interfacial materials, and the operation parameters. At winter-contaminated movement areas, the interfacial material--snow and ice--cause the major operational problem with aircraft performance. Contrary to popular belief, snow and ice exist at temperatures greater than 0.85 T-sub-m, where T-sub-m is the melting point in Kelvin. The central issue is how to evaluate the attainable friction force between the aircraft tires and the pavement, contaminated with a high-temperature rate sensitive material, and relate that to aircraft performance. This paper describes a new retrospect of snow and ice related to such a tribosystem. |
