Résumé | Demyelination is the process by which the myelin sheath wrapping nerve axons in white matter is degraded, disrupting the conduction of nerve impulses. This destructive course occurs in multiple sclerosis (MS), causing paralysis, blindness and muscle weakness. We have previously demonstrated the potential use of IR spectroscopy in characterising healthy and MS diseased autopsy tissue.1 We have now extended our studies using an animal model of demyelination (as in MS) and remyelination (as in individuals undergoing remission) to characterize brain tissue at the various stages of the disease process and to explore the possibility of assessing these conditions in-vivo with the use of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. |
