| Résumé | The widespread occurrence of numerous cyanide-containing compounds in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems has been known for many years, and has been attributed to both natural and man-made sources. Because several cyanide-containing compounds are known to be very toxic to resident biota under certain environmental conditions, there is concern about the potential detrimental effects from the release of elevated levels of such compounds to the aquatic environment. The Subcommittee on Water of the NRCC Associate Commlttee on Scientific Criteria for Environmental Quality requested that scientific information be gathered and reviewed on the fate and effects of cyanide-containing compounds in the Canadian aquatic environment.
The following document briefly reviews the physicochemical properties of cyanide compounds along with analytical methodologies used for water samples. The fate of cyanide-containing compounds in the aquatic environment is also examined. The majority of information contained in this document refers to the toxicity of molecular HCN to freshwater fish, especially at the chronic level of exposure. Where available, information on the effects of cyanides on other aquatic organisms is included. This document does not treat the topic of cyanide in drinking water for ingestion by man or nonaquatic animals, nor the effects of cyanides on terrestrial organisms. |
