| Abstract | A sycamore helicopter fitted with an electro-thermal de-icing system was tested under different simulated conditions of icing severity over a wide range of temperatures. The effect of icing on handling and performance was assessed and power requirement for clean shedding was determined.
The de-icer pads had a low fatigue life due to the flexibility of the main rotor blades. Flexing caused creasing of the erosion shield and cracking of the nichrome heater elements. |
