| Abstract | A series of specific tests was carried out on a J85-CAN-15 engine to assess the relative performance of old-production and new-production series T5 amplifiers and VEN power units. No noticeable differences were established between the two types of T5 amplifiers tested. The new-production series VEN power unit: advanced the steady-state minimum NPI condition from 98% compressor speed to 96.5%; decreased closing nozzle slew rates in transient tests by 10 to 20%/s; and reduced the minimum VEN opening by 1.5% under steady-state conditions and by 3% during throttle bursts. With distorted air inflow, three of eleven bursts from 40% THRUST to MAX A/B ended in compressor stall and A/B flameout. These stalls could not be attributed to any particular T5 amplifier or VEN power unit, or any combination of them. |
