Abstract
In a double-resonance experiment, the intensities of transitions of the A nucleus of an AX system of spin 1/2 are affected by relaxation rates, magnetogyric ratios of the A and X nuclei, and the frequency and intensity of a decoupling field applied to the X nucleus. A simple mathematical method, based on a superspin formalism, is presented for calculating these intensities for continuous decoupling, and also for decoupling interrupted during data acquisition. Calculated intensity patterns for appropriate parameter sets are compared to experimental results for formic acid and bromoform, with carbon-13 as the A nucleus and proton as the X nucleus. Comparisons are made which indicate that it may be difficult to deduce all the spectral density values from intensity patterns.
