| Abstract | A method is presented whereby the effect of linear taper on the root stress and tip growth due to centrifugal loading on a rotating blade can be assessed. Relations for both parameters are derived for blades with constant cross-sectional area from root to tip, and for blades whose cross-sectional area varies linearly with radius from root to tip. Non-dimensional factors are then defined to relate results for the tapered case to those for the untapered case. These factors are expressed in terms of the hub-tip ratio and taper-ratio and plots are included for wide ranges of both these geometric parameters. Thus root stress and tip growth of linearly tapered blades can be obtained using factors read from the graphs to modify results for untapered blades as evaluated from the simple relations pertaining to the latter case. |
