| Abstract | This document, published by the National Research Council of Canada for the Régie du bâtiment du Québec, contains both the new edition of Chapter I, Building, of the Quebec Construction Code, and an amended version of the National Building Code of Canada 2020 that clearly indicates the changes adopted by Quebec. This document is a useful resource for designers, contractors and owner-builders in particular. This document sets out technical requirements applicable to the construction of buildings and facilities intended for use by the public in Quebec. Key changes in the new edition include the following modifications: • The introduction of a new type of construction, encapsulated mass timber construction, for timber buildings up to 12 storeys • The improvement of building accessibility through: o a revision of the minimum dimensions of building components o the introduction of requirements for universal bathrooms and showers, visible and audible signals, and tactile safety signage o an increased number of accessible pedestrian entrances and floors • The introduction of home-type care occupancies (Group B, Division 4), a new major occupancy subject to the requirements in Part 9 of Division B • New technical requirements for large farm buildings, which are introduced in the new Part 2 of Division B • Changes to Parts 3 and 9 of Division B, which include the following topics: o penetrations and continuity of fire separations o safety glazing • The introduction of changes relating to structural design in Part 4 of Division B, include the following topics: o classification of buildings o serviceability limit states o design of roof parking decks o design of floor slabs o snow drifting o design of roof-mounted solar panels o design of parapets o design of attached canopies o design of storage garages o updated wind design data • The introduction of changes to Part 5 of Division B, including for the following topics: o airtightness o new material standards • The introduction of changes to Part 6 of Division B, including new requirements for evaporative heat rejection systems to minimize the risk of the presence of disease-causing micro-organisms such as Legionella • The introduction of changes to Part 9 for the protection from soil gas ingress |
