Abstract | Transport Canada has retained the National Research Council of Canada, as represented by the Automotive and Surface Transportation portfolio, to evaluate heavy-duty 6x2 drive technology, the implications the use of such technology may have for Canada, and to develop a test plan which, upon execution, will provide the necessary data to evaluate the technology. The present document contains the results of the literature review performed to evaluate the use of 6x2 drive technology in support of the test plan development. Contained within this document are an overview of various 6x2 architectures and a review of the current regulations applicable to 6x2 use in Canada. Also included is a review of various operational considerations for the use of 6x2 drive highway tractors including implications on vehicle weights, traction, tire wear, maintainability, and stability. |
