| Abstract | Exposure of tobacco (Tb) and tomato (Tm) isolates of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) to dilute alkaline solutions (pH > 8.0) at 0° results in disassembly of the virus particles. Over the range of pH and NaCl concentration studied, Tm-TMV was more sensitive to alkaline conditions than was Tb-TMV. Kinetic analysis demonstrates that both isolates disassemble in a stepwise manner and that each produces six major intermediate-size particles. |
