| Abstract | This report describes an assessment of the M-10 exhauster-plant start-up noise level; this assessment was used to define the specifications for a commercially-supplied silencer. It also describes the evaluation of the silencer against its desired performance.
The initial measurements showed high noise levels close to the stack outlet with levels of 104-113 dBA during exhauster surge conditions, and 102 dBA with steady flow operation of the exhauster. In a neighbouring residential area the noise levels were 10-15 dBA higher than the early morning background noise levels with exhauster-plant operating in the surging condition. Both near- and far-field spectra showed peak noise levels near 2000Hz.
After installing the silencer, the noise levels close to the stack were reduced to 70-78 dBA at surge conditions and 60-65 dBA under steady flow conditions. In the residential area there was no detectable increase in the noise level above the background with the silenced exhauster operating.
The measured silencer performance showed good agreement with the specified performance goals. |
