| Abstract | St. George Dam is located in the lower watershed of the Magaguadavic River in southwestern New Brunswick. An extreme rainfall event in December 2010 caused extensive flooding upstream from the dam, and local residents raised concerns related to the operations of the dam during and prior to the event. In 2012, the dam operators commissioned a 1D numerical modelling study to characterize the hydraulics of the river-dam system. Further study and communication with residents and stakeholders was required to improve their understanding of how the dam operation may or may not influence upstream water levels under various hydraulic conditions. More recently, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) developed a detailed 2D hydrodynamic model of the river system (based on the TELEMAC-2D solver) to assist the dam operators in optimizing their operation protocols. Results from these numerical simulations have also been used to develop an online interactive tool to clearly explain to laypersons the relationship between the dam operations and the river system, including the fact that opening more gates does not increase discharge or reduce upstream water levels in all circumstances. The online interactive tool provides a means for residents and stakeholders to experiment and learn about the response of the river system to changing flow and dam operation conditions. |
