Abstract
Development of the Canadian northland has progressed so rapidly during the last decade that the problem of providing the facilities of modern living in the North has become one of the greatest current engineering problems. Owing to unusual features of the climate and the ground, it is apparent that engineering practices of more temperature regions cannot be applied without modification. This is particularly true of the design of water and sewer services in regions of "permafrost" or perennially frozen ground.
