| Abstract | A perturbation analysis of a cylindrical structure of a transversely isotropic (hexagonal) fiber in an infinite thick isotropic matrix with a thin isotropic interface (bonding) layer is presented. The perturbation formulation offers simplicity for numerical calculations and reveals the effects of density and stiffness constants (c₁₁ and c₄₄) of the bonding layer on the phase velocities and cutoffs of acoustic waves propagating along axial direction of the fiber. Numerical results for dispersion curves of pure guided flexural F₁₁, F₁₂, and F₁₃ modes and torsional T₀₁, T₀₂, and T₀₃ modes unperturbed and perturbed by the bonding layer are given as examples. It has been found that the reduction of density of the bonding layer increases the phase velocities while the reduction of stiffness constant c₄₄ or c₁₁ decreases the phase velocities of guided modes. However, the effect of c₁₁ is negligible compared with that of density or c₄₄. Effects of bonding layer material constants on the dispersion curves are larger for higher‐order guided modes and when the operating frequencies are closer to the cutoffs, hence it is preferable to use higher‐order modes and acoustic frequencies near cutoffs for the detection of the bonding quality. |
