| Abstract | This report reviews published work on prediction methods for planing hull performance in waves. Experiments on simplified prisms for a range of length to beam ratios were carried out in regular and irregular waves. Non-linear relationships between motions and wave heights were observed and so development was continued for the irregular waves only. This data was presented in a form that would allow the interpolation of motions, accelerations and added resistance for three non-dimensional sea states. The same data was used to verify numerical models developed for simple planing prisms in waves. Linear and non-linear techniques were found to be superior. The facilities of the Ocean Engineering Centre were reviewed and areas for development identified, which should lead to a development of expertise in the behavior of planing hulls in waves. |
