Abstract | The Seismic Upgrading Guidelines (SUG) are designed to supersede the "Guideline for Seismic Upgrading of Building Structures" published by the National Research Council Canada (NRC) in 1995. It serves as a companion document to the recently developed Level 3 – Seismic Evaluation Guidelines (SEG) by NRC. The SUG outlines a set of objectives and considerations for selecting upgrading techniques to address structural and non-structural deficiencies identified through one or more of the three-tier evaluation procedures in Level 3 – SEG. It provides a comprehensive discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of various upgrading techniques for mitigating seismic deficiencies. The document includes general and conceptual upgrading details to aid structural engineers in choosing suitable techniques. These techniques are described in a generic manner, with schematic details illustrating the upgrading design concepts. However, they are not fully engineered and require proper analytical design input from a structural engineer to develop specific design details. This document does not offer specific design criteria or details for direct application, nor does it recommend specific devices. |
