Abstract
Undistributed specimens of a sensitive clay are loaded in increments of short and long duration and at a constant rate of strain. The preconsolidation pressure and the proportion of primary and secondary consolidation, as determined by pore pressure measurements, are shown to be a function of test procedure. Comparison with field rates of loading shows that the laboratory rates are quite unrealistic.
