Abstract
In Reference 1, a number of drives were compered for the wing-immersed lifting fans of a jet-propelled VTOL aircraft with an all-up weight of 20,000 lb. There were eight 3-ft. diameter fans, four in each wing, and four gas generators to supply gas either for driving them or for jet propulsion in level flight. Each fan was required to give p maximum lifting thrust of 3750 lb., equivalent to a disc loading of 530 lb. /ft², for a total maximum take-off thrust of 30,000 lb.
