| Abstract | As part of comparative, round robin, study by the Ice Committee of the 22nd International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC), the Institute for Marine Dynamics (IMD) conducted a series of tests, to help determine a recommended procedure for measuring the compressive strength of model ice. A special ITTC test apparatus, used to perform the compressive strength tests, was circulated among the participating ice tanks. The Ice Tank at IMD, as the second particpant in the study, received the apparatus from the Ship Research Institute (SRI), Japan, and conducted tests on three sheets of model ice. The apparatus allows measurements to be made of the uniaxial compressive strength of model ice in-situ, by compressing a floating sample between two platens. The results were compared to those obtained from a conventional testing machine. |
