| Abstract | The Instantaneous Crankshaft Angular Velocity (ICAV) technology is a system of sensors and signal processing hardware/software capable of measuring variations of angular velocity throughout each revolution of rotating shaft. The information can be displayed as a continual waveform whose shape represents the frequency and amplitude of angular velocity excursions from an average. When applied to a reciprocating engine, the ICAV system will display a waveform depicting the firing of each cylinder. Non-uniform performance among cylinders creates distortions in the ICAV waveform, which can be used to identify the rogue cylinder and to estimate the magnitude of performance degradation. Thus, the ICAV technology has potential as a machinery condition monitoring device, with particular applicability to reciprocating engines. |
