Abstract
This paper discusses some of the harmful effects of water on building materials, particularly those used for roofing systems. These effects include dimensional changes, frost action, corrosion, leaching and efflorescence, biological deterioration, and blistering. It then describes sources of water such as initial moisture content, construction moisture, water vapour inside buildings, and precipitation as a result of weather. The modes of moisture migration, including water vapour diffusion, air leakage, and rain leakage are examined. Finally the paper states some principles of design that must be followed to control water from all sources and so limit or avoid moisture problems.
