Abstract | This paper describes a comparison between the guidelines for carrying out model experiments on damaged ships. One set of guidelines is given by SOLAS under a regional agreement, where model tests can be used to demonstrate ship survivability of a damaged ro-ro passenger ship. Another is a more general set of guidelines prepared by the ITTC Specialist Committee on Ship Stability. A third set of guidelines based on proposed revisions to the SOLAS agreement is also included. The strengths and deficiencies of each set of guidelines are compared and recommendations are made for a harmonized approach, which would have SOLAS specifying te survival limites, for model experiments carried out to ITTC standards. |
