Rheology and processing of multiphase systems

Abstract
There is a growing commercial and academic interest in multiphase polymer systems such as polymer blends and alloys, polymer composites, filled materials and co-formed plastics. The properties of these systems depend strongly on the flow induced morphology and on the distribution of residual stresses. To optimize their processing and properties, it is important to know both the melt rheology and the orientation of the dispersed phase. Industrial formulations are notoriously complex. However, it is possible to understand, and sometimes predict, their behabiour by a systematic comparison with simpler and better known systems such as solutions, emulsions, foams and suspensions. The key items to understand are the flow-dependant structure and the non-equilibrium thermodynamics. This chapter concentrates on the general principles obeyed by mulitphase systems. A brief description of particularities of the investigated complex materials and their processing is given.
