Abstract | A p-terphenyl dye laser has been pumped with a high energy XeCl (308 nm) pulse of up to 50 ns (fwhm) duration. An untuned dye laser output of ∼0.14 J was obtained with an energy conversion efficiency of ∼27% and a temporal profile corresponding to that of the pump pulse. For pump levels ≥10 MW/cm2 pump induced absorption processes resulted in a decrease in the energy conversion efficiency with increasing pump flux. A similar effect was observed in other dyes. However, even at the highest pumping levels and longest pulse durations no triplet-triplet absorption was observed for PTP lasers. |
