Abstract | A study was conducted to examine the interaction between a four column semi-submersible and pack ice in a series of two experiments. In the first experiment, a 1:100 scale model was rigidly attached to a towing carriage and towed through a broken ice field modelled by paraffin wax pieces. The pack ice modelling technique and the characteristic of ice accumulation at the model were examined. In the second experiment, a 1:39.37 scale moored model was towed through a broken ice field where the mechanical properties of the ice were also modelled. In this experiment, the ice forces exerted on the model and the model motions were measured and correlated with the amount of ice accumulation observed. The test results indicated that the columns were vulnerable to ice impact, and when waves were present, multiple impact by the same floe was possible. Ice-bridging occurred on calm water tests only and caused the formation of an ice prow. Ice forces exerted on the mooring system were measured and were found to be insufficient to impose significant dynamic motions on a semi- submersible. |
