Abstract
This paper describes limit state design--a unified procedure of structural calculations for the design of all types of civil engineering structures. It has been in use since 1954 in the U.S.S.R. and it is being adopted in Europe for reinforced concrete construction. The reasons for its increasing popularity over existing procedures, such as allowable stress design and plastic design, are given in this paper. Before describing limit state design a brief review is given of shortcomings of existing design rules, criteria of structural design and optimum design.
