Abstract | The air barrier system is a key to the effective performance of the building envelope. Its importance in controlling the transfer of heat, air and moisture is reflected in requirements in the National Building Code. Although this role has been recognized for more than forty years, the industry did not have a generally recognized test method to evaluate whether an innovative air barrier system would meet the intents of the NBC requirements. Enter the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC). CCMC, with the support of industry partners and IRC researchers, developed a test method that enables a manufacturer to determine whether its innovative air barrier system meets the intents of the NBC requirements. This Update reviews the NBC requirements for air barrier systems, explains the test method and shows how it applies to three-storey buildings. |
