Abstract | With concrete block walls, sound insulation is mostly a function of their mass per unit area. With being heavy, such walls -- even single-leaf walls -- usually provide STC ratings of 50±5. (Double-leaf concrete block walls with their greater mass can potentially provide even more sound isolation.) Then sealing the surface of such walls with plaster, block sealer, or just paint, and sound transmission is even further reduced. Attaching gypsum board supported on furring or studs and using sound-absorbing materials can improve sound insulation considerably, depending very much on just how it is done. |
