Abstract
A commercial infra-red gas analyzer with a solid, sealed optical system has been modified for use in measuring steady-state rates of photosynthetic CO₂ exchange in field conditions. The complete unit, including power supply weighs 20kg and is easily carried and operated by one person. The response to either internal optical calibration or CO₂ differential is linear, only sightly affected by ambient temperature and constant during battery discharge. With a simple clamp-on leaf chamber the rate of CO₂ uptake by pea leaves was constant within 30 s of chamber closure and up to 30 measurements per hour were possible. Rates of CO₂ uptake by leaves of 25 cultivars of pea were normally distributed between 80 and 1300 μg m ⁻² s ⁻¹. Despite large differences in measuring conditions, with 16 measurements each, cultivar means differing by only 80 μg m ⁻² s ⁻¹ could be resolved.
