Abstract | Stakeholders at the national and local levels are committed to advancing the field of quantum technologies in Canada. Canada is a world leader in photonics research and development, and continues that trend in the emerging field of quantum technologies. Deeply rooted in photonics, quantum technologies utilize unusual quantum features to build technologies and devices radically different than is possible with traditional physics. Canadian photonics “firsts” include the development of the fiber Bragg grating in 1978, high-speed data transport (10 Gbit), as well as the breakthrough invention of the quantum key distribution protocol in 1984. |
