Abstract | An engineer is interested in half-cell potential measurements because they give an idea about the possible state of corrosion of the steel reinforcement in concrete. Interpreting such measurements is trickier than just slapping one electrode here and another one there, and reading something meaningful from a voltmeter. After all, the concrete in the structure may have undergone carbonation, suffered chloride ion intrusion, and been mixed with anodic or cathodic corrosion inhibitors. The measurements are influenced by these and many other factors. Therefore, their correct interpretation is a matter of knowing what exactly the influences amount to. |
