Abstract | Who would have believed that in a floor assembly the mere placement of screws 25 mm further inward from the edge of gypsum board increases the fire resistance by 50%? Yet it is so. Given that for a floor assembly builders can choose from different types of insulation, different types of joists spaced differently, one or two layers of gypsum attached in different ways, etc., finding the ideal combination to give good fire resistance can be quite a challenge. But that is not the only challenge, for increased fire resistance must not be gained at the expense of increased sound transmission, which can easily happen. |
