Abstract
In this paper, we describe the results of numerical prediction of ice accretion and the resulting aerodynamic penalties on an SD7037 airfoil. NRC in-house numerical codes were used to compute the airflow field, drop trajectories, ice accretion and finally aerodynamic characteristics. The analysis was performed for cruise and landing conditions and for a wide range of icing conditions identified in the FAA Appendix C icing envelope, which cover a range of drop sizes, air temperatures and liquid water contents. For selected icing conditions, the resulting decrease in lift, increase in drag and change in pitching moment have been examined.
