Abstract
Half of the area of Canada and the USSR is covered by permafrost. Differences in climatic and topographic conditions result in major dissimilarities between the permafrost areas of the two countries. Almost all of Canada was covered during the Pleistocene by a continental ice sheet, whereas only local ice caps were formed in Siberia. The permafrost regions of the USSR extend further south than in Canada, although Canada has a greater area of permafrost in the Arctic. The mean annual air temperature is the same in both countries, but Siberia experiences slightly colder winters and warmer summers. There are also differences in the botanical and pedological conditions. All these factors contribute to the formation of a thicker and more extensive permafrost layer in the USSR than in Canada.
