Abstract | A study was conducted to demonstrate the development and characterization of different polylactic acid (PLA)-lignin blends. The effects of a compatibilizer and chain extender on the blend properties were investigated. PLA/TPL blends were prepared on a Leistritz 34-mm co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 42, using a sequence of twin-screw operation. The first half of the extruder was dedicated to lignin plasticization and lignin and sorbitol were fed in a dry powder form and glycerol and water were added to lignin through the plasticizer injection port. The water was used as 'temporary' plasticizer for lignin and was removed by devolatilization in a subsequent extruder portion to provide a water-free TPL. The second part of the extruder was used to mix the TPL with the PLA. The viscosity of the PLA/TPL and effect of a chain extender on the blend's viscosity were also examined with a C.W. Brabender mixer. |
