| Abstract | The Metro Toronto Roads and Traffic Department and the Engine Laboratory of the Division of Mechanical Engineering at the National Research Council of Canada are undertaking an exploratory study to determine the effect of traffic signal sequencing on vehicular fuel consumption. The present strategy of minimum travel time may not be the most desirable for energy conservation, hence the need to obtain a good correlation between vehicular fuel economy, travel time, and number of stops over a given route. Definitive results on a single route could then be applied to the complete signal network, thus reducing overall fuel consumption. |
