| Abstract | This report presents the results of de-icing flight trials using plastic tapes on the rotor blades of Sikorsky S-55 and S-58 helicopters during the period February 1 to April 5, 1963.
None of the tapes tested gave satisfactory de-icing performance when relying on the tape alone to shed ice. The combination of polyethylene tape with an aerodynamic discontinuity did give some improvement in ice shedding when compared with the bare blades in the temperature range of 0° to -8°C. However, further testing will be required over the full temperature range before any definite conclusions can be made. |
