| Abstract | This report provides a comprehensive review of the current status of fire safety codes and standards applicable to Battery Electric Bus (BEB) facilities, specifically focusing on storage and repair garages. As Canada transitions toward net-zero emissions, BEBs have become a critical component of transit infrastructure, yet they introduce unique fire safety challenges that are not fully addressed by existing prescriptive codes.
Currently, no single code or standard entirely defines fire safety requirements for BEB facilities. The National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) and The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards do not specifically address the risks associated with charging and storing high-capacity (400–1000 kWh) electric bus batteries
This report discusses fire safety codes and standards relevant to the following:
- Design Methods and Process
- Fire Safety Design Objectives of BEB Facilities
- BEB facility Hazard Identification
- Fire Scenario Characterization for BEB Facility Design
- Fire safety engineering analysis to develop mitigation measures
o Detection
o Suppression
o Fire Separation and Resistance
o Smoke control
o Firefighting
- OPERATION/Fire Safety plan
The report also briefly discusses the standards governing BEB design and operation. Finally, gaps in vehicle and facility requirements standards (such as detection, suppression, and fire resistance) are highlighted. |
