Abstract
Performance and emission comparisons were made between #2 diesel fuel (Cetane Number 46) and an aromatic tar sands derived fuel (Cetane Number 35) in a direct injection Ricardo Hydra single cylinder test engine which was optimized for #2 diesel fuel. It was found that tar sands fuel had higher cylinder pressures, larger cycle-to-cycle pressure variations, higher rates of pressure rise, longer pressure delays, less smoke, higher emissions of carbon monoxide at part load, higher nitrous oxides and higher unburned hydrocarbons. This report contains extensive graphical test data for more detailed study. describes the apparatus and test procedures, and presents the results.
