Abstract | Three-dimensional digitization and modelling is an emerging sub-field of imaging used to create 3D copies of objects, environments and even humans in digital space. At the National Research Council (NRC), the Visual Information Technology (VIT) group refers to this process as 'virtualizing'. And why 'virtualize' reality? Because with 3D visualization of objects and environments, we can now virtually make the mountain come to Mohammed. From the digitization of space to virtual tours of inaccessible historic sites and loans between scholars of digitized artifacts (fragile fossils, tablets bearing cuneiform script), 3D digitization offers a wealth of new possibilities for scientific, cultural and artistic research. This paper describes the VIT group's work and shows how newer and more advanced 3D imaging techniques enable us to create digital representations of our world. |
