| Abstract | Since it's introduction as a filler for plastics about a decade ago, mica has found many applications. The principal asset of mica is its planar structure which imparts high rigidity to planar parts. As is the case with other fillers, the increase in stiffness is accompanied by a reduction in yield and breaking elongations. This leads to a reduction of impact strength. To date most of the research and development work on mica reinforcement has been done to polyolefine (PP, HDPE). Several high volume products containing around 20% mica are now on the market. Composites of mica with plastic other than polyolefine have received little attention. The objectives of this work were to study the effect of mica addition on mechanical properties of Nylon 66, to study the weldline strength and morphology in the mica/Nylon 66 composites and to determine to what extent the weldline properties can be controlled by processing conditions |
